Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma's (BCBSOK) employees have deep connections in our communities.
That's because we all benefit from strong neighborhoods and social services. It's also because we know we do a better job for our members when we bring diverse perspectives to our work.
More than 70 of our employees serve as official representatives on nonprofit boards and committees across Oklahoma. They work with organizations addressing everything from basic needs for infants to safe spaces for seniors.
Stephania Grober, vice president of plan operations for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, serves on the board of Family & Children's Services (F&CS) . The nonprofit organization is the largest provider of addiction and mental health services in the state.
"F&CS heals hurting and abused children, strengthens families and provides hope and a path to recovery for those battling mental illness and addiction," Grober said.
BCBSOK, meanwhile, is committed to empowering whole-person care for its members. That requires understanding and addressing social and economic factors that affect people's health.
"Within the company, we talk about the social determinants of health – how food security, safe housing and stable relationships have as great an impact on health as a visit to the doctor," Grober said. "It was through my service on the board that I gained a better understanding of how these issues shape and drive everyday decisions," Grober said.
Experiences like these help BCBSOK employees come up with innovative approaches to health insurance and care management, connecting members with the services that help them live their best lives.
